We run monthly playreadings during the winter months where members of
Lympstone Players meet to share reading a selection of plays.
Our first reading in 2019 will be on Sunday 13 January in the afternoon
as usual. We are
considering “Semi Detached’
a comedy/ farce from the early 60’s which won much acclaim, moving from the Coventry Belgrade Theatre, where it starred Leonard
Rossiter, to the National Theatre where Lawrence Olivier took over from him. It was later made into to a film.
It’s a play about social class
and ruthless social climbing (we may only be semi detached now but one day we will be fully detached!). It is as amoral and scheming as a Restoration Comedy and the author (David Turner) clearly
intended that the style of acting of that period should be drawn on as well as its values.
